Les Misérables

Les Misérables

Ask people for their opinions of post-revolutionary France and they may look at you blankly;  mention ‘Les Misérables’ and many will grow misty-eyed. In a triumph of emotive storytelling over genuine historical interest, the hugely popular musical celebrates its 25th year with a world tour.

Famed theatrical producer Cameron Mackintosh promises a completely new version of Les Mis, reflecting the musical’s contemporary appeal. Love, morals, politics, drama: Les Mis has it all. A new cast boasts musical stalwart John Owen-Jones as Jean Valjean, busy escaping a criminal past, and Gareth Gates, desperately rescuing a faltering career in the safer world of musical theatre, as Marius. Mercifully, Susan Boyle is not involved.

Mackintosh also promises special effects, brand new sets (based on Victor Hugo’s own paintings) and a show that will “engage the younger generation”. It might not have the cachet of the West End, but Les Mis is a fully immersive behemoth of a show that will appeal to fans and newbies alike.
